Newhaven Breakwater

Newhaven Breakwater    Whats Happening
Newhaven is situated at the mouth of the river Ouse in East Sussex, the entrance to Newhavens harbour lies between two piers, protected from the prevailing wind by a substantial long stone breakwater to the west. At the begriming of the breakwater, there is an extensive pebble beach, on the seaward side and on the inner side there is a sandy beach. At the end of the breakwater there is an imposing white round lighthouse made of cast iron.

The western arm of the breakwater shelters a popular diving site, easily assessable from the car park below Newhaven Fort. It is a short walk down the beach on the west side of the arm that leads to the entry point. We will be following the arm out to the large rocks stacked against the breakwater and there we will be descending.

What we should see
Hopefully if the weather is kind to us we should get a glimpse at shoals of whiting and pouting, crabs and lobsters, flounders, wrasse and pollack. There are also known to be a number of world war II depth charges which we will try to avoid. There are a lot of small starfish and fallen rocks from the breakwater.

 What do you need
Your own Scuba gear (or hire it from Diving Unlimited)
Tanks (2 as there may be the option to do 2 dives)
Lunch (or money for lunch as there is a pub nearby or we can BBQ?)
Car park money (Pay and display)
Surface Marker Buoy (between a buddy pair)
Torch (as you never know)

When do you need to be there
The tides are looking good and high tide is about 11:30 so we should be in the water for 10:30 so as we dont get caught in the tide going out. The coast guard has informed me that diving the breakwater is good at any time although there is a strong current when the tide turns!

How do you get there
By Car Newhaven is located between Brighton and Eastbourne on the A259 Coast Road, or by following the main A27 & heading along the A26. Once in Newhaven follow the signs into Newhaven Town Centre, from South Way turn left into South Road (police station on the corner) which leads into Fort Road, this leads to the car park for the sandy beach From London take the M25, M23, A23 the A26 into Newhaven then follow the direction above
