Seaford

Seaford - The Gannet
Whats Happening
Seaford is a historic seaside town just to the East of Newhaven. It was well known as a haven for smugglers and there was a 17th centry prayer God keep us from Seaford and its shags. Shags being the term for smugglers! There are over 14 wrecks the beach and we are aiming to find the Gannett.

The Gannet was a 1,824 ton steamship traveling from Calcutta to London and was carrying a cargo of Tea, coffe, wheat, linseed, cotton, indigo, hides, stags horns and wood. She ran a ground on the 14th February 1882 during bad weather and it took 3 weeks to releave her of her cargo.

What we should see
Hopefully if the weather is kind to us we should get a glimpse at shoals of whiting and pouting, crabs and lobsters, flounders, wrasse and pollack. The Gannet lies about 50 yards from the shore in line with a drain by the Martello Tower. As far as I could see there is a marker bouy on her!!!! How easy will that be to find.

What do you need
Your own Scuba gear (or hire it from Diving Unlimited)
Tanks (1 dive due to the tides)
Lunch (or money for lunch as there is a pub nearby
Surface Marker Buoy (between a buddy pair)
Torch (as you never know)
Catch bag.

When do you need to be there
The tides are looking good and high tide is about 13:27 so we need be in the water for 12:30 so as we dont get caught in the tide going out. We will meet behind the Martello tower on the shingle car park area around 11:00 to assess the condtions.

How do you get there
By Car Seaford is located between Brighton and Eastbourne on the A259 Coast Road, or by following the main A27 & heading along the A26. Once you hit Newhaven follow the signs into Seaford (A259 Newhaven Road), from the main road turn right into Marine Parade and follow it to the seafront, then along the seafront to the Martello Tower. From London take the M25, M23, A23 the A26 into Newhaven then follow the direction above
